Gilles Groulx’s first feature, Le Chat Dans Le Sac signalled the beginning of a distinct Quebec cinema, preoccupied with the questions of identity and place which would become the themes of a generation. As Claude, a young Quebecois journalist, reflects on his encounters with the “establishment” around him and discusses them with Barbara, his Anglo-Jewish girlfriend, we share his growing sense of alienation from his society, and his tentative steps toward a different reality; one where he feels more at home, even if maturity, personal or political, may require a parting of the ways. This interior quest, echoed in the film’s improvisational style, hand-held camerawork and evocative music, opened a cinematic debate that led to the emergence of the new wave of Quebec filmmakers.
