So You Want to Donate? It's All About Choices!

Most of us, at one time or another, will find an audio-visual item or collection – old record albums, canisters of films, home videos, etcetera – lying around the house and very likely suffering image or sound degradation, if not both! Most of us don’t have climate controlled vaults in our homes and if we own, inherit or otherwise come to possess AV recordings, we have to decide if we can keep the items in good condition ourselves or, if not, we decide whether we’ll dispose of them or consider donating them to an organization that will preserve them as part of its heritage holdings. So, the choices begin. This site is here to help you assess what you’ve got and, if you decide to investigate making a donation, how to make informed choices about where to start, and how to proceed.

Thanks!

The information on this site was assembled with the gracious assistance of two senior executives at Library and Archives Canada (LAC), the newly forged entity encompassing the former National Library of Canada and National Archives of Canada. AV Trust thanks Richard Lochead, Chief, A-V Acquisition at LAC and Richard Green, Acting Director, Music Division at LAC, for their help.
